The Walther P99 is a semi-automatic pistol that was originally developed in Germany. This pistol originates from 1994, publicly shown three years later. The P99 came to the market for the use of law enforcement, security forces but also for civilians. The pistols were widely used by the German Police and are used as standard police weapons for instance in Poland. Designs and magazine capacities of the pistol were modified several times during its production history. The first generation of the pistols was made in 9 mm (16 rounds) and from 1999 also in .40 calibers (12 rounds) as S&W version. In 2004, the second generation of the pistols with newer design and better ergonomics were presented by new models as P99AS (Anti Stress), the double-action only P99DAO and P99 Compact made with an input from Smith & Wesson company. The new generation of the P99 pistols is represented by the P99QA (Quick Action). This model introduced a new Anti Stress feature of the trigger guard that was partly pre-cocked. This enabled to pull for the shot in single action mode longer than for the next ones. The PP has a number of typical features. Standard P99 is highly rated short-recoil operated pistol with a double-action trigger system and the Browning locking system. Each weapon contains three interchangeable grip backstraps that can be adapted due to personal preferences. Rail is fitted at the front of the polymer frame with adjustable rear sights. The safety catch uses a de-cocking lever. The weapon would not be fired unless the trigger guard had been pulled by a fall of the external hammer. There are also other different models of Walther P99 available. The Model P99 Military is typical with its mat green frame; Model 990 is a double action version of the P99, Model P99 DUDER/P99 was designed specially for the needs of hunting inspectors; Model TPH is a small pocket version and much more. Nowadays, Walther Firearms, still based in Germany, produce a wide range of these popular pistols. Original 9mm P99 pistols are manufactured also in Poland. Smith& Wesson is an exclusive distributor of Walther s pistols in the United States since 1999.
