In order to figure in government contracts for new army or police pistols Walther brought the P88 onto the market in 1987. Strangely enough, Walther decided to abandon the trusted falling block locking systems for this model and switched to a variation of the Browning bolt-action. A locking lug is attached to the bottom of the barrel chamber that locks the chamber block into the ejector port in the slide. The first series had an ambidextrous combined unlocking lever/slide catch on the frame. As of 1990 this pistol has been manufactured with an ambidextrous combined unlock/safety catch mounted on the slide and an ambidextrous magazine release. The separate slide catch is on the left-hand side of the frame. Using the P88, Walther took part in the USA Army trials. It must have left an extremely sour taste in Walther's mouth when the Beretta 92F was finally chosen, for this pistol has the tried and tested Walther falling block locking. The standard version of the double-action Walther P88 has a total length of 195 mm (7 ¾ ") and a barrel length of 106 mm (4 ¼ "). The height is 140 mm (5 ½ "). The weight is 800g (28 ¼ oz) and the magazine capacity in 9mm Para caliber is 14 rounds. The automatic safeties of the P88 are the same as that or Model P5.
